Every Rectifier Got Read. The Calendar Still Says Five.

Two clocks run on the same system and neither one forgives. A rectifier owes six inspections a calendar year with no gap over 2½ months, and the test station owes an annual survey with no gap over fifteen. Under 49 CFR 192.465 a rectifier carries an interval limit and a yearly count, and they are not the same requirement. §195.573(c) says the same thing for hazardous liquid. Satisfy the gap every time and the count can still land at five, because 2½ months into a year divides badly and nobody notices until somebody counts.

Nothing quietly slides past the ceiling

Every rectifier and every test station shows its last record, its next due date and how many days are left. Overdue sits at the top in red with the number of days it has been running past due. Anything falling due inside a fortnight sits under it in amber, with enough notice to actually schedule the trip.

The reading is judged as you enter it

Pick the criterion — −0.850 V polarised, on-potential, or a 100 mV shift — type the pipe-to-soil potential, and the app tells you pass or below criterion before you leave the screen. No working it out later against a threshold somebody half-remembers.

A below-criterion reading cannot just sit there

§192.465(f) wants the extent of inadequate protection determined and corrected, and a close-interval survey where the cause is systemic. A reading under criterion stays flagged on the status screen until a remediation record is raised against it and given a close-out date.

Remote reads counted, physical inspection still owed

Mark a unit as remote-monitored and its remote reads count toward the six — but the app keeps asking for the one on-site physical inspection that calendar year, and flags the unit if remote reads pile up without it. PHMSA's April 2026 rulemaking on remote monitoring is exactly this distinction.

The rectifier register

Unit ID, location or milepost, system or line served, install date, rated output, and whether remote monitoring is fitted.

The test station register

Station ID, location or milepost, line served, and the protection criterion normally applied at that station.

The rectifier inspection

Date, unit, inspector, DC volts and amps, tap setting, hour-meter reading, operating status — normal, low output, off or faulted — on-site or remote, notes and corrective action.

The survey reading

Date, test station, surveyor, pipe-to-soil potential, measurement method, reference electrode, criterion applied, and the pass or below-criterion determination made at entry.

The remediation record

Extent of the affected area, whether the cause is systemic or localised, the action taken or scheduled, close-interval survey status, and a close-out date.

The output

Filter by unit, station, type, result or date range. Export the filtered set to CSV, print any single record on one page, back the lot up to JSON.

Field labels carry the CFR paragraph they come from — §192.465(a) on the survey, §192.465(b) and §195.573(c) on the rectifier inspection, §192.465(f) on the remediation record. When somebody asks which requirement a field covers, the answer is on the field, not in a binder back at the office.

What gets flagged, and why

Flags come from what you logged and what the calendar says. Nothing is guessed, and nothing is buried three menus deep.

  • Past the 2½-month ceiling — a rectifier whose next-due date has gone by, shown with how many days it has been running over.
  • Past the 15-month survey ceiling — a test station whose annual reading is overdue on its own clock.
  • Due within 14 days — either clock, with enough warning to schedule it rather than discover it.
  • Below criterion with no remediation — a reading under its criterion and no §192.465(f) record raised, or one raised and never closed out.
  • Short on the yearly count — from October, any rectifier under six inspections for the calendar year, with the shortfall spelled out.
  • Remote reads, no physical inspection — a remote-monitored unit with reads on file this year but nobody yet at the unit.
  • Never logged — a unit or station on the register with no record against it at all, which is the one a spreadsheet never surfaces.
